My Testimony
Hello, this is Remy, a disciple of Jesus and a shepherd for college students especially those who are addicted to video games.
Listen, I dropped off from college to pursue esports. My parents invested all they had to send me to a private high school in England, yet I ruined it by pouring out my life for pro-gaming in Warcraft III. At that time I was 17. I was sick and tired of being a good student and a good boy. I wanted to do something I loved. “Life is short, and you don’t want to regret.” Battle.net – European ladder became my home where I spent all my time there competing against other players striving to make into the top 10. The longest hours I have ever played for is 36 hours, without sleep. Eventually, I quitted school and went back to my home city – Beijing, where I played in a regional tournament of WCG. Sadly, I had to go back to school because of the deal I made with my parents. They said, “If you get into the top 10, we will fully support you. But you have to go back to get your undergraduate degree if you fail.” I got the 11th.
During my college years, I still did not give up playing. World of Warcraft consumed most of my life during that time. I became the first rogue in the server to have the full T1 Gear. I recorded videos of my PVP. I built my own guild with other top players in the realm. It seems that I was enjoying my life, but every morning when I went to bed, that loneliness, void, thirst just filled my heart. I watched pornography, went to pub or night clubs, chased after girls, did everything I could do to fill my void. But it became worse.
In 2013, I came to the US for my master degree at CSULB. By God’s divine intervention, I was dragged into one bible study, and it was the first time I heard the gospel. Every bible study I asked many questions, it lasted more than 2 hours each time! I was so amazed to see that this little nurse who was much younger than me knew human life. I’ve tried all things, but she just knew the truth. Later at one conference, I was blown away by a sister’s testimony, that she shared something that a girl would never share. She then talked about how God had transformed her from a party, crazy girl to a bible teacher. Deep down inside, I wanted to be like her.
God spoke to me personally through John 18:37, where Jesus said, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” He knew he’s going to suffer, he knew he’s going to be crucified, but without fear he boldly testify to the truth, the very thing that I have been looking for. I looked for the truth in video games, career, relationship, and many other things. In X-Files, it says, “The truth is out there,” but the truth is right here! Then, Jesus asked Peter three times, “do you love me,” then told him “feed my lamb” three times. I accepted God’s calling and followed Jesus to live as a shepherd for college students specifically, gamers.
Since then, I’ve been teaching the Bible at the campus of Cal State Long Beach and meeting students worldwide online for the word of God.
May God set all gamers free from their addiction, and raise a new generation of shepherds.
Amen.
